理工系の学生の進路選択

最近友人がこんな記事を書きました。これを書いた小野くんとは、留学時代に一緒に貧乏旅行に行ったり、学生団体を２つ立ち上げたり（STeLA / 米国大学院学生会）と、友人としてもプロジェクト仲間としても良い影響を受けました。彼は文才があって、以前にこういう記事も書いてもらいました。

今は彼はアメリカの NASA でエンジニアをやっていて、私はシンガポールの大学で教員をやっています。彼に限らず、ボストン留学中に仲良くなった理工系、とりわけ博士課程留学の友人は軒並み個性が強くて、今でも再会すればしょうもない話から専門の話まで話題には尽きません。進路と言えば、昨今はとりわけ外資系のコンサルティング会社に入った人が多いかと思います。

今回は小野くんの「理工系学生の進路」についてのコメントに端を発して、自分の考えるところを書いてみたいと思います。自分がどのように今に至ったのかもそうですが、とりわけ今は大学で働いているので、縁のあった学生や研究員がどのような進路を選ぶのかについても大事なことだと思っています。ややポエムのような発散した感じになりますが、ご高覧頂けたらと思います。

私の就職活動を振り返ると、博士課程を終える頃に色んな迷いがありました。進路に迷った理由はいくつかあったように思いますし、迷ったことが悪いというわけでもないのですが、「自分のやっていることが社会の役に立っていない」という妙な劣等感があったようにも思います。日本語に「社会人」という不思議な言葉があるのですが、学生は社会のためになっておらず、社会人は社会に貢献しているような空気があるように思っていました。当時アメリカにいて、それでもなお、日本で育んだそういう感覚は払拭できなかったように思います。今は笑い話ですが、25 歳のときに高校の友人 8 人で食事をして会計が 71,000 円だったとき（よく飲んだな、しかし）、私は学生だという理由で 1,000 円で済んだことがあります。まああれは帰国中の私を歓迎する方便だったのかもしれませんが笑　ともあれ、日本での社会人の学生に対する優越感は今でも妙な感じがします。

卒業が近くなっても進路が決まらなかったので、場所を問わず、メーカーや、経営コンサルティング会社、大学での研究職などに応募しました。メーカーや大学の研究職は自分の専門に準ずるものでした。経営コンサルティング会社は、MBA コースに留学していた先輩方が多かったり、大学で頻繁にリクルーティングをしたり、研究室の上級生の就職先でもあったりして、名前を知っていたり、理系のバックグラウンドを生かせるといった触れ込みで興味を持ったのだと思います。グローバルに仕事があるよ、みたいなのも当時 27 歳前後の自分には魅力でした。

結果と言えば、日本のメーカーの就職活動は 4 月の入社に合わせての卒業が難しそうで（アメリカの博士課程は卒業時期はまちまち）、残念ながら途中で面接も立ち消えになってしまいました。今はもう少し融通の利いた状況になっていることを願います。外資系の経営コンサルティング会社は比較的相性が良くて、インターンをさせてもらったり、日本の偉い人との最終面接まで進んだ会社もありました。結果としてはご縁はありませんでしたが、面接を通らなかったことが示唆するように、選ぶ方が私が求める人材ではないことがわかったのに加えて、自分もこれを毎日の職業にするにはミスマッチかなあという印象を持てたことは良かったです。いくつか記憶に残る経験はさせてもらったんですが、中でも「あなたは発想のジャンプ・創造性が足りないですね」というフィードバックをもらったことは、今でも全力で根に持っています笑　今もその会社に勤務する方にお会いすると「私よりも面白いことを言えるんですよね」と煽ってしまうような私の人間としての未熟さは隠しませんが、お互いクリエイティブな仕事を積み重ねて、30 年後にまたお会いしたいです。

就職活動から感じたことで（あるいはそれに限らず、その後ずっと日々を重ねての感覚とも言えますが）、１つ自分にとっては大事なことがわかりました。そんなに仰々しい話でもないのですが、他人のニーズ（問題）を埋める仕事と、自分のニーズ（問題）を埋める仕事があるということです。前者は「社会的」であるとされて報酬も高い一方、後者はその逆であるし、なんなら仕事とすら見做されないかもしれません。日本の社会人は、前者のような仕事に取り組む人を指すとすれば合点がいきます。一方で自分は後者のようなことに日々を費やすことに面白さを感じて、研究職はそのような側面が強いとも思いました。もちろん現実的には、研究職も自分のやっていることを相手によって切り口を変えながら説明して研究資金を得るのも仕事の一部ですし、時間の一部を教育活動に使って他人のニーズを埋めることもしているので、100 ％ 後者に振れられる仕事は少ないと思います。ただ、できるだけ後者寄りの仕事をしたいというのが、就職活動やその後の経験から学んだことでした。特定のテーマでベンチャーを起業する人も、似た感覚の場合があるのかもしれません。

マクロの話になりますが、アメリカの Top Tier の研究大学を卒業した学生の進路がどうなっているかと言うと、こんなデータがありました。業種で分かれているわけではないので詳細まではわからないものの、MIT の博士課程を修了した学生の 40 ％ 程度がコンサル・弁理士・金融のような業界に進むのかと思います。私が博士課程を終えた 2009 年も、周りを見たら 1/3 がアカデミア（ポスドク）、1/3 が企業研究者、1/3 が日本的にいう文系就職（コンサルや金融）という印象でした。そんなに変わっていないのかもしれません。

私は研究業界にいるので、できるだけ多くの優秀な人に研究職を選んで欲しいと思っている一方で、全員を安定的に吸収できるようなポジションがないのも理解しています。なので、文系理系限らず、様々な業界に人が散らばるのは必然で、かつ悪いことではないとも思います。それはそうなんですが、博士課程で切磋琢磨した友人や後輩がコンサルなどに入っていくのを見て、一抹の寂しさがないわけでもないです。

現状 Top Tier の研究大学を卒業した学生には様々な選択肢があって、僕ら研究業界の中の人は、人材の取り合いとしているという意識を持った方が良いのかと思っています。ただ残念ながら（特に大学の）研究職は誰かのニーズを埋めているわけではない以上、待遇で魅力的なオファーをすることが難しいとも思います。経済学科などの場合は民間水準まで給与を高めていたり、最近はコンピューターサイエンス学科などでもやっているかもしれません。まあただ、それでも企業の給与には及ばないんじゃないでしょうか。おそらく構造的に、給与で民間の企業に勝つのは無理なんだと思います。

私は博士課程を修了した人には（研究が好きならば）研究職を選んで欲しいと思っています。人材の取り合いで良い人が来ないと業界として盛り上がらない。国の研究費に財源を頼る場合は給与のレンジもそこで決められそうですが、研究職を選ぶ人の別の選択肢を理解した上で、十分に競争力のある給与を提示できるような発想を政策決定者にはお願いしたいです。最近は日本の大学でも、若い研究者に給与を支払うようになってきてるようだし、特別な博士課程プログラムもあるというのも拝見しました。本当に良い流れだと思います。

同時に中の人の我々は、給与面以外の部分での、仕事の面白さ、楽しさを伝えて行けたらと思います。自分の問題に取り組むのは本当に楽しいことなんですよね。実際、企業に入って自分の時間を他者のニーズに費やしていた人が（もちろんそれをおかしいというつもりはありません）、いざ MBA 留学などで自分を見つめる時間ができて、起業するようなストーリーは枚挙に暇がありません。研究職のトレーニングとして、修士課程・博士課程で自分の問題を探して向き合えるということは贅沢なことで、その姿勢は「社会人」の数年・十数年先を行ってるのかもしれません。

現職に就く前でしたが、理工系の専門を突き詰める姿勢は世界に繋がる、ということを自分なりに体で示したいと思って、世界各地で仕事をしたことがありました。その時のことはこのように書いています。

あともう１つ付け加えるなら「博士課程」「理工系」「研究」に対する日本の閉塞感が残念であり，もう少し夢をみられる社会になっていいんじゃないかと思います．大学院生時代にボストンの友人と立ち上げた，「博士課程」「理工系」「研究」に従事する人が，自分の研究と世界の繋がりを見られるように，という学生団体は，８年経った今，日本ではコンサルや金融業界へのステップストーンになっています．そのような進路に進む友人にも後輩に否定的な印象はありませんが，一方，そういった進路に進まなければ，将来，自由度を持って活躍する夢を描けないのが日本社会なのだとしたら，それはそれはもったいないし，その認識は正しくもないと思うのです．

今も全く同じように考えています。
