グローバル人材を目指す！そんな猛々しく、蒼臭く輝いた時代が私にもありました。その過程を、他人とのコミュニケーションの方法の変遷という軸で振り返ると、全く関係ない面白みがありました。

私は日本で郵政省が存在していた時代に少年時代を過ごしました。ポケベルや携帯電話は今でいう「リア充」の嗜好品であり、私には縁遠く、緑の公衆電話でボタンを押し続ける人を眺めていました。その後アメリカに留学しました。アメリカの大学寮には有線 LAN が入ってて、ICQ とか Microsoft Messenger などのチャットソフトと、Hotmail などの無料メールを使って友人と連絡を取るのが主でした。その後 Gmail が出てきて、これは使いやすいと思いました。2005 年くらいだったと思います。

同じ頃 SNS というのが出てきて、Facebook は 2004 年の初期段階で招待メールが届きました。mixi も 4000 番前後で早い方だったと思います。あと、当時は Gree という健全なサイトがあって、日本人の留学生がたくさんいました。ニューヨークで痛飲してボストンに帰ると「気持ち良い飲みっぷりでした！」と紹介文が書かれていて、振り返ればこれも良い思い出です。気持ち良く飲むのも自分の一部、キモくよどむのも自分の一部、ネットでは自分の一部が切り取られて表現されるのは、その頃にわかりました。

とはいえ、比較的ユーザーが少なかったはずで、SNS が個々人のイメージに繋がるような大それた話もなく、極めて気軽なやり取りに使っていました。学生が多かったこともあり、お酒の席ではしゃいだこと、思いつきの下らないこと、パーティーの場所や時間を書き込んだり、知ってる人だけが見る掲示板のような雰囲気がありました。成功話、良い話、役に立つことを書く雰囲気もなければ、かわいい猫の写真がシェアされることもない、政治的な話もヘイトスピーチも現れない、失言をしても自分の仲間内で止まって、go viral のような表現もなく、比喩的に言うなら「 SNS で『ウンコ』と言っても過小評価されない」、そんな牧歌的な時代だったのではないでしょうか。

そうこうすると、Facebook、Gree、Mixi などに「普通の人」が増えてきました。中学・高校時代に遠巻きに眺めていた、緑の電話の前でボタンを連射していたような人たちで、いわゆる「リア充」です。「リア充はギークの後追い」と知ったのはその頃でした。リア充がクリエイティブでない、というのは乱暴かもしれないけど、メインストリーム過ぎて、ソツがなくて面白みに欠ける、そういうレッテルと表裏一体だと思いました。さらに言うなら、自分もこの件では真の意味でのギークではありません。Facebookでも mixi でも、比較的導入したのが早かった人（early adopter というらしいです）の上流に「作った人」がいて、自分の仕事においては真の上流地点を目指す意気込みでやろう、と思うようになったのもこの頃です。

コミュニケーションという話に戻ると、Facebook Messenger のユーザーが増えて、仕事で使う人が増えてめんどくさいと思った 2013 年頃から、色んな国を仕事で転々としました。ブラジルの研究室では連絡用に WhatsApp を入れて欲しいと言われ、台湾でも良く似た理由で LINE を入れ、久しぶりの日本では年賀状やお中元を送ったり（これはまあ好き）、仕事で Fax で発注をする伝統芸能を学びました（これはめんどくさい）。最近で言えば、シンガポールの中国人コミュニティーでは WeChat を使って仕事をしたい、と提案されました。研究室に来ている高校生に SMS（電話のメッセージ）で連絡がしたい、と言われた時には、さすがに「私たちのチームのルールに合わせて、E メールを使ってくれ」と断りましたが 笑

これらの多くのケースでは、自分が他国を訪問した形ですし、既に多人数が使っているツールに合わせる利便性は理解できます。一方で後発だと、他人や既存のルールに振り回されてしまうので、めんどくさいことも多いと感じました。これもまた、ツールの使用であれ、技術の開発であれ、早い段階で導入したり、オリジナリティーのある仕事をしたいと思った理由です。
