シンガポールに来て半年になります．最近はできるだけこの国のことを知りたいと思い，週末には少しでも街に出ようとしています．最近のパターンは，近所のバス停に行って，行き先を決めずに直後に来たバスに乗って，何かありそうな所で降りて，観光したり作業をしたりする，というようなものです．近所のバス停に限ればほとんどのバスに乗ってしまったので，１度まで乗り換えを認めるというようなルールを追加していこうと思います.[ref]職場で割り当てられたオフィスに窓がなくて，オフィスでずっと作業をしていると気が滅入ります．だから休みくらいどこか外に出たいという狙いもあります．[/ref]

そんなことを繰り返して２ヶ月くらいになりました．自分が訪問した場所に限りますが，最近少しずつシンガポールの雰囲気がわかってきたので，現時点での感想をまとめておきたいと思います．現時点での感想を１文でまとめると「街のパターンが決まっていて，期待を裏切られるような驚きが少ない」です．勝手にシンガポールの街のつくりを分類すれば，

  1. 都市部のオフィス街，高層ビルとホテルと高級ブランド店
  2. 地下鉄駅，隣接したモール
  3. バス停か地下鉄駅，すぐ近くの高層ビルの集合住宅，スーパーマーケット・食堂・個人商店の集まり
  4. 1, 2, 3 を結ぶ道路，道路沿いにある大型の店（IKEA とか）

という感じです．

現段階で物足りないと思うものを挙げるなら，道路や路地沿いに何もないことです．決まりがあるのか，土地の価格の問題なのかわかりませんが，ほとんど一戸建てのような家はありません（まあ，特定の地域では見かけますが，特定地域の高級住宅街に限られている感じです）．ただ何となく散歩しているときに，個人商店とか，小さな喫茶店とか，絶対に採算が取れてなさそうな意味不明な店が並んでるようなことはありません．むしろ散歩してワクワクするエリアも少ないかなあ，というのが今のところの印象です．必要なものは手に入るんだけどそれ以上の遊びがないというのでしょうか，そういうところが少し物足りないかもしれません．

個人的な好みになりますが，物足りなさ，というのは，面白みがあるかないか，ということなのだと思います．1 と 2 のオフィス街の店や，駅の周りのモールなどは，先進国の都市部——東京やニューヨークはもちろん，ボストンや名古屋も含めて——と大差ありません．それらはドリフならば上からタライが落ちる程度のお約束の存在ですから，タライが落ちてることを確認できる以上の面白みはありません．3 の食堂と商店の集合が，やや雑多としていて面白みはあると言えそうですが，前述の通り人が住むエリアが限られていて，何だか計画的に作られた感じが否めないところです．

まあ，自分の移動手段はバスと地下鉄と自転車ですし，いずれにしても半年程度の経験で言えることも限られています．やや文句は言いましたが，そんな中でも自分が好きなエリアも見つかりましたし，ヘイズや空調が原因になってそうな空気の悪さを除けば生活に不満はありません．むしろ生活するには便利な国なのは間違いないところです．これを読んでる友人の皆さんは，ぜひ遊びに来て下さい．

前置きがかなり長くなってしまったんですが，上記の例を踏まえて，「計画通りに進む」ことで，取りこぼしたり，生まれないものがあるのではないか，と言うのが今回書きたかったことなのです．でも前置きが長くなってしまったのでまた機会があればにします（そう，物事は計画通りに進まないのです）．

少しだけ書くなら，シンガポールは上手に都市計画をして作った街だと理解していますが，上記のような不満もあります．他にも計画都市といえば，ブラジリアやネイピードーも「素敵な都市」という感想を聞かないかなあ．一方で，例えば東京に少し住んでたとき，すごく良いと思った（都市計画と対極にありそうな）谷根千というエリアがありました．よくわからない混沌とした街で，デザイン・計画されたものが評価されてると言うよりも，予想外の形で生まれたものや，長い歴史の中で勝手に発展したものが受けているのではないか、という感想を持ちました．都市計画の話などは一住民以上の視点を持ちませんが，研究にしても，例えば数年プロジェクトの研究結果は最初のプロポーザルで予想したものと全く違うけど，じゃあプロポーザルって何が予定通り行って，何が予定通り行かないと良いのでしょうか．そもそも「面白い結果」というのは，大方にして「予想外の結果」を指しますので，プロポーザルに書かれた通りに行ったら，ある意味「面白くない」ということになってしまいますよね．なんて理屈っぽいことを言いはじめると疑問は尽きませんが，まとまらないのでまたいずれ考えたいと思います．
