友人たちとやってる「米国大学院学生会」で留学のための情報提供活動をしていますが、そちらのニュースレターで自身の留学体験記を書かせて頂きました。

以前にブログで書いた自分の留学のきっかけに加えて、米国大学院の博士課程を経験した自分の感想をまとめました。

フォローアップ

留学体験記にも書いたように、私は特に留学をすすめたいとは思っていません。仕事でも進学でも結婚でも遊びでも、人に言われたからどうこうするなんてのは、現代の日本でいい大人がイケてないと思いますし、上手く行かなかったときのために逃げ道を作っているようにすら聞こえます。個人のライフスタイルに合わせて、自分がやりたいことをやれば良いと思っています。

私ができることは、留学経験者として情報提供することかと思いますが、今回の留学体験記はページ数にも制限があったため、特に大学院生活で感じた５点について、この場を使ってフォローアップできればと思います。まずは上記の体験記を一読の上で、下記の補足に進んでもらえればと思います。

大前提

  • 私は日本では高校までしか行ってません。
  • 私は最終的にPhDを取得できたので、苦労がいい思い出になっています。

ということなので、日本の状況と比較して、という議論は想像でしかないことが１つ目の注意。あと、博士課程の経験を結局のところ肯定的に評価しています、というのが２つ目の注意。あえて否定的に書いてみるくらいで公平な気もしますが、いずれにしても、筆者がどんな人かという大前提を踏まえて、以下５点のフォローアップです。

1. 研究と社会との繋がりを考える

2. フラットな組織体制、自己管理の必要性

この２点について、大学院の入りたての学生さんにはしんどい可能性があることも覚悟して欲しいと思います。

組織体系がフラットであることは、指示系統、指導系統がきちんと確立していないことにも繋がりかねませんし、大局観が重視された指導のために、実際に実験を行うための技術指導を受けられない可能性もあります。幸い私の場合は、同じ研究室のポスドクが立ち上がりの面倒を見てくれたために独り立ちすることができました。幸運もありましたが、人に積極的に助けを求めて、コミュニケーションを取りながら上手くやれる能力やキャラが必要になることもあります。

自分の研究の社会の中での価値を知ることは、おそらく研究者のキャリアでは次のステップ（助教授以上）で生きてくるのだと思います。米国では助教授以上は独立して、研究資金を獲得して、研究室のマネジメントをするのが主な仕事です。その段階まで行くと、自分の研究の有用性を資金提供者に説得できることは必須能力です。

つまり私のいた研究環境は、研究者として必要な能力を育てる環境ではある一方、実験を遂行することが主な仕事である、最初の１、２年の学生に取っては厳しかったと思うわけです。事実「ひとしきりの能力が身についた後の、ポスドクとして来るには素晴らしい環境だ」と形容されたこともありますし、私もその通りだと思います。一般化はできませんが、米国のトップスクールの大きな研究室では、教授が有名で多忙なことが多いため、管理体制が私の所属した研究室に似た形の場合も多いという印象です。

自分の成長度合いに応じて、必要なものを全て提供してくれるような研究室は少ないと思いますので、足りないものは自分の頭と足を使って補完するしかありません。自分が成長段階のどの位置にいて、どのようなサポートを受けたいのかを考え、足りないものを補うために研究室や進学先を選んでもらえればと思います。これは難しいんですが、積極的に経験者に相談することで何とかしましょう。

余談ですが、私は学部卒すぐに博士課程に入ったため（そして分野を変えたため）、実験の仕方を学ぶのに少し時間がかかったと思います。修士卒で入った学生は、その辺りの強みがあるように見えました。アメリカの大学院では「博論が終われば終わり」なので、留年や飛び級などの概念はありませんが、私の所属した研究室では、結果として修士卒の学生が５年程度で卒業できる場合が多いのに比べ、学士卒の学生は６年以上かかる場合が多かったと思います。

この辺りの「指導」に関して日本の多くの研究室でどのような状態なのかはわかりませんが、学士-修士-博士-助教-准教授-教授、というある程度しっかりした階層構造のおかげで、新人を指導する機能が上手く働くこともあるのかな、と推測しています。この辺意見あれば聞きたいです。

3. 国際的な研究室メンバー

コミュニケーションの仕方については、（いわゆる）日本的なスタイルが通じづらいので、留学して少し戸惑うこともあるかもしれません。個人のレベルでは自由に振舞えば良いですが、仕事をする場合はアメリカのスタンダードに合わせる必要があります。彼らなりのプレゼンの仕方、自己主張の仕方、自分の成果の守り方も学ばなくてはなりません。

相対的にアメリカ人に多いと感じますが、自分の弱みを見せず、自分を大きく見せて、かじりたての知識をもとに専門家のように話し、それらによって会話の中でアドバンテージを取り、自分の貢献を示そうとする雰囲気が存在します。住んでいるのがアメリカなので、仕事場である研究室では、そのような雰囲気が支配的になります。

もしあなたが朴訥な日本の理系の人である場合、周りにいる外資の流行りの企業にいそうな、自信満々で弁が立って自己主張が強いタイプに常時囲まれていることを想像して下さい。アメリカは基底状態が「外資系」です。これは性格によっては大変なストレスを被ります。（ステレオタイプをごめんなさい。もちろん外資で働いてる方の性格も色々あるのだと思いますが、外資系の企業で生き残るためにも特定のキャラや振る舞いが求められてて、こんなステレオタイプになるのかな、なんて思います。）

ハーバードのとある学科では、自己主張が苦手なアジア圏の学生が、「ウチの研究室とは合わない」という理由でクビになったケースを見ています。彼とは友人ですが、性格は穏やかで対立を好まないタイプの性格です。とても勤勉にも関わらず、シャイな性格も災いして、ボスの眼に入るところでアピールを上手に出来ず、一緖に働いたアメリカ人が彼の貢献を正当にボスに伝えず、研究室のスタイルと合わないと判断されてしまったようです。忙しいボスや同僚は、あなた個人の性格を汲む労力を使ってまで、サポートしてくれないかもしれません。そんなことも有り得ます。

そんな厳しい現実も目の当たりにしたため、ストレスを感じても、仕事で生き残るためには文句は言ってられません。真っ向から相手と対面して相手の誇張を指摘して黙らせて、自分を成果を守ることも厭わなくなりました。どうでも良いことを大げさに話して自分の知識を誇示することも、必要であればするようにしています。しかしながら、それは自分の美意識にそぐわない、極めてさもしい振る舞いで、やっていて気分の良いものではありません。

まとめになりますが「正当な評価を得るために、特定の振る舞いが求められる場合がある」という可能性は留意しておいて欲しいと思います。これはかなり一般化されたステイトメントなので日米変わらないかと思います。今回の文脈で言えば、米国でプロフェッショナルとして生きるなら、いかにも日本人らしいコミュニケーションをする人は割を食いやすいので、多少ストレスに感じても仕事に必要なことだと割りきって、求められる振る舞いをする必要がある、ということです。繰り返しになりますが、博士課程で留学すること＝米国で働くこと、です。

私は日本で働いたことがないので、日本社会で働くことの大変さ（特にこういったコミュニケーションの観点で）は文字にできるほど肌で感じてはいませんが、どんな違いがあるのかは興味があります。「空気を読む」に代表されるように、日本でも多くの不文律はありそうですが。

4. 将来の選択肢

将来の選択肢については、世界中で選択肢を得るチャンスはありますが、もちろん意識的な努力があってのことだ、ということは付け加えておきたいと思います。例えば、アメリカ滞在が長くなり、何もしなければ、日本での就職のチャンスは間違いなく減ります。私の場合は広く選択肢を検討している一方で日本での就職の可能性も閉じたくはないので、帰国時に関連分野の先生に連絡を取って、大学や研究所を訪問させてもらったり、セミナー発表の機会を設けて頂くようにしています。学部時代のコネクションすらもない私のような場合は、より一層の努力が必要になりますが、それは当然必要なことだと考えるべきでしょう。

大学院卒業時の就職活動については、企業に限って言えば、アメリカ、ドイツ、中国、インド、日本の会社に応募して、興味を持ってもらった会社の中から、アメリカ、ドイツ、日本の会社との面接を行いました。

アメリカ、ドイツの会社からは、渡航費・滞在費を全て負担されて研究所を訪問しました。（こういうところ、日本企業も頑張って欲しいです。ちゃんとお金を使って人を評価してください！）これらの会社はいずれも、大学でのセミナーの後のレセプションで企業の方の名刺をもらって直接コンタクトする、企業との共同研究をきっかけに採用担当社に紹介してもらう、などの「コネ」を利用しています。同様の経緯でサウジアラビアの石油会社にインターンの応募をしたこともあります。自分で足を使って人に会って相談して、意識的に動くことが必要です。ポーランド、ブラジルに帰国した元同僚から、興味あればいつでも来いよ、というオファーをもらうこともありましたが（Gmailチャットの口約束ですが（笑））、同僚との関係を大事にすることも将来の選択肢に繋がるかもしれません。まあこれは一緖にビールを飲んでただけですが、マッチョな努力だけではなくてそういうのも大事です。

大学・企業の就職活動共に、積極的に動くことは必要条件です。「研究室推薦」というようなシステムは聞いたことがありません。（「教授の推薦状」と「研究室推薦」は全く違うものです、念のため。）黙って座っていても何か得られるわけではありませんが、積極的に人と会い同僚や共同研究者と円満な関係を継続することで、可能性が世界に広がる環境です、というのが私の経験です。

5.日本人との繋がり

多くの人に取っては、２０代の半分くらいを外国で過ごすことになりますので、その際に日本で起こるだろう人との出会いの機会は失われます。個人の性格にもよりますが、やはり日本人ですと日本人同士の方が付き合い易いことも多いですし、お互いを理解し合えて深い話ができるレベルの友人や仲間も出来やすいかもしれません。私の場合は、とりわけ日本を含む東アジア、南アジア、ヨーロッパ出身の留学生と良い友人関係になれている気がしますが、やはり日本人は特別に楽です。他にも、日本人のパートナーを見つけたい方は、その時期が留学によって先送りになることだってあるでしょうし、家族と長期間離れることにもなります。

このような「ソフト」な面での機会の損失についても、自分の将来設計を鑑みた上で、一考に値するのではないかと思います。

まあでも最後に人を動かすのは、論理的な判断よりも、「これはアツい、やってみたい」という熱意だと思いますけどね。私はそういう熱意のある人は全面的に応援したいと思います。（なんて散々理屈をこねた挙句に、義理・人情・男気の軸で結論を出してしまうところなんて、自分は実に日本人だなあと思います。まあこういう性格でもなんとかなるっちゃなりますが。）
