久しぶりのブログになります。明けましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いします。

「世の中の」なんて大上段に構えて話し始めるほどのものではないのですが、僕は、少なくとも個人の扱う範疇では、世の中の多くは実現したり改善したりが可能なのに、考えすぎたり、自分の中で壁を作ってしまっているから何も変化がないことが多いと思います。「少し考えて、ちょっと勇気を出して、急いでやってみたらできた」ということって結構あるのではないだろうか、そんな体験談を２つ。

１．糸井重里さんとのランチ

昨年の話になってしまいますが、Twitterで糸井重里さんが「ボストンにいます」という趣旨の書き込みをされていました。ボストンの日本人仲間で「糸井さんボストンらしいよ」とやりあっていたので、僕が調子に乗って「ご飯でも誘おうぜ」という話になりました。結局声をかけたのは一番調子にのった言い出しっぺの僕になりました。

僕は初期のボキャブラ天国の時から糸井さんは好きで、若干緊張したものの、ネットから糸井さんが離れてしまう前に声をかけなくてはいけません。自分がどういう人か名乗って、何故自分たちと食事をすると面白いかもしれないのかを伝え、一緖にご飯でもどうですか、というお誘いを１４０字で礼儀を尽くして書いてみました。すると２分後くらいに反応があって、昼食の時間を取って頂けることになりました。テキパキした敏腕の糸井事務所の方とやり取りさせていただいて、さくさく話が進んで、結局MITのエンジニアと糸井事務所ご一行様という、面白い食事が実現したわけです。

もちろん糸井さん、糸井事務所の皆さんのご厚意があって実現した話なのですが（ありがとうございました！）、この一件からは、月並みなのですが、議論を重ねる事、考える事と同じくらい、実際にタイミング良く動くことが大事なのだということを改めて実感しました。

２．バッキンガム宮殿でガムを食べると罰金はあるのか

先日、ふとどうでもいい上記の疑問が頭をよぎりました。普段はこんなどうでもいい疑問はやり過ごすことが多いのですが、休日だったのでせっかくだからできるだけ効率よくこの問題の答えを出してみたい、と思って最短ルートを考えてみました。

考えたと言っても、まずGoogle サーチ、答えが出なければ直接メール、返事がなければ電話、の３段階で大凡行けるだろうという結論に１分で達したので、すぐに実践してみたわけです。

HPを１５分ほど眺めても特に情報はなく、メールを出すことにしました。あまり適切なメール先が見つからなかったのですが、選択肢の中で６割くらい趣旨にマッチしている「チケット予約部門」に質問をしてみました。

（質問メール）
I am planning to visit Buckingham Palace during my stay in London, and I am looking for a policy regarding eating/drinking in the palace. I was not able to find any information on the website, and would greatly appreciate if you could direct me to any appropriate website or personnel for my question.

Specifically, I am interested in whether chewing gum is appropriate in the place, and if there is any fine associated with the act.

I would like to avoid unintended rude acts there, and hope to obtain the information in advance.

Thank you very much for your time to provide information. I am looking forward to visiting the palace.

すると、週明けにメールが来て

（回答メール）
In response to your enquiry, I can confirm that no eating or drinking, including chewing gum, is permitted in the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace.

と回答を得られました。最初のメールで「ガムを噛んだらFineか、あるいは噛んでもFineか」みたいなメールでかぶいてみようかと思ったのですが、そこは真剣に相手の情報を引き出したいと思って自重しました。結局「罰金か」までの完全な答えは見つかりませんでしたが、疑問を持ってから実働３０分くらいでそれなりの答えが得られたと思います。この茶番劇からの学びは、

  1. サーチによる情報よりも、部外者で議論するよりも、答えを知っている相手に直接聞いたほうが速い
  2. ６割くらいしか適切でないように見える行動でも、結果が出ることがある
  3. 真剣さを見せるのは相手を動かすのに必要なのかも
    （架空の質問をして相手の時間を使って遊んでしまったのは事実なのですが、ちゃんとお礼を伝えたことでご容赦頂ければ。）

以前、企業でのインターンをさせてもらった時に感じたのは上のブログの論点の１点目でした。自分が判断に時間をかける性格なのは理解していたので、会社の方に同じことを指摘された時も納得したのを覚えてます。アカデミアだと、おそらくビジネスよりも時間をかけて正確さを高められる気がしますし、むしろそれが大事な要素の１つです。

まあ、このトレードオフは個人の好みで一番合う点を選べば良いと思います。自分は仕事については時間をかけて世の中に出す方が性に合っていると思うので、今のところ現在の仕事に満足しています。ただ今回のダジャレの検証、みたいな茶番問題の場合、スピード感のあるやり方が適切なのは間違いなさそうです。さらに研究の中でも問題に時間かけるべき問題、そうでない問題の優先順位はあるので、良い教訓になったと思います。

結論としては、「少し考えて、ちょっと勇気を出して、急いでやってみたらできた」は多いので、目的によってそういう取り組み方も悪くないと思います。むしろ、目的に応じて使い分けられると強いでしょうか。せっかく世の中、いろいろなツールが発達して風通しが良くなったわけですから、不十分に見える準備でも積極的に動くことで、キーになる人と繋がったり情報を得たりして、色んなことを起こしていけると良いですよね！
