私の好きな旅券（いわゆるパスポート）に関する話なのですが、旅券愛好者の間では色んな種類を所持するだけでなく、「ページを追加する」のが 1 つのステータスだと思います。これは国境を通り過ぎてスタンプを押す余白がなくなった人が、役所で物理的に旅券のページを増やすということです。それなりに難易度とレア感が高いと思います。

私は 30 代の全てをかけて「ページ追加」の栄誉を追っていました。30 代前半は 1000 年に 1 度のスーパーグローバル人材だったので、アメリカの労働ビザにはじまり、ブラジル・サウジアラビアなど 1 ページ占有するようなビザでボリュームを稼いでいました。バングラデシュの 1 ページスタンプもありました。当時の私のルールでは会社の出張で貼られた査証は詐称であり、自分の意志で手に入れた査証が些少の誇りでもありました。俺は会社に言われるわけではなく、自分の意志と足でこのパスポートの全ページを埋めてやろう。三菱商事だろうがマッキンゼーだろうが、あまつさえ外務省にすらも負ける気はありませんでした。

東南アジアに異動してからは、味気ないシンガポールの顔認証入国（スタンプなし）に翻弄されました。入国審査官が押してくれるブルネイ・カンボジア・インドネシアなどのスタンプで人間の心にふれて、そしてページ追加の可能性をつないでいきました。日本に帰国するときは、顔認証ゲートにも関わらずスタンプを押してもらっていました。これは公的書類のために出入国した日の記録が揃っていた方がいいという理由でやっていますが、ページの余白は減りました。

畢竟、私は自分の意志を大事にするという規範に価値を見出して、パスポートのスタンプを集めるという行動でそれを表現しようとしていたのだと思います。お前のパスポートの 45 ページの査証欄のうち一体いくつのページにお前の意志が載っているのか、誰もあなたにそんなことは聞かないでしょうけど、しかし自分が自分に問うて疑問を感じない生き方をしたいではないですか。国が勝手に決めたたかだか 45 のページから、自分の意志が溢れ出すような生き方をしたいではないですか。そういう意味で私が戦っていた相手は商社マンでもグローバルコンサルタントでも外交官でもなく、自分自身だったのだと思います。そしてその戦いに負けました。

「旅券のページ追加」は 10 年かかるプロジェクトです。10 年あればいろんなライフイベントもあるでしょうし、勝負をかけられる 10 年が人生に何回あるでしょうか。入国ゲートの電子化の流れを考えると、もしかしたら私は今生で最後のチャンスを逃したのかもしれません。とはいえパンデミックの中でも健康でいられたことに感謝して、そこに自分の意志があるのだからもう一度勝負したいと思います。ビザや入国スタンプがやたら大きい国などのマニアックな情報交換をしつつ、次の 10 年も一緒に頑張っていきましょう。
