よく大人は「手段の目的化」だと言います。最近流行りの例だと DX とか、少し前だと AI など、それの導入自体が目的で、DX やら AI やらの先に何を見据えているのが明確でないような状況だと理解してます。多くの場合は上位の概念、大局観のようなものが欠けていることに対して、批判の対象になっているようにも思います。

しかしこの手段の目的化なのですが、子どもの世界だと日常的に行われているのかなあ、と思いました。例えばじゃんけんをするのは大人ならば何かを決める手段ですが、子どもはそのプロセス自体を楽しめる。バスに乗るのは大人はどこかに行く手段ですが、子どもはそれ自体を楽しみにしている。あまつさえエレベーターのボタンを押すことすら手段ではなく目的であり、それ自体が当人の満足や幸せを生んでいることを考えたら、果たして自分が持っている（そしてより優れていると思っている）大局観は妥当なのか、ということも思います。

言い換えてみたら「手段の目的化」というのは豊かな発想とも言えそうです。これも大人が言ってますが「経験の価値」なんてまさにそれだと思います。個人的には iPhone ユーザーはコスト意識が低いと思っていますが、スマートフォンを使って何かしたいわけではなくて iPhone を持つという経験に価値をおいている、というのが有り体の説明だと思います。こういう例を考えれば、大人の世界でも手段の目的化など頻繁に起こっており、ビジネスパーソンが使ってるイキり系のフレームワーク（手段の目的化、ユーザー体験の価値、なんでも良いけど）も矛盾だらけなのかもしれません、知らんけど。

何にしても手段と目的は人や立場によって認識に大きく違いがあって、その違いがストレスや対立を生むのかなあと思いました。週末に子どもが「バスに乗りたい」というんだけど、どこに行くわけでもないのです。私には苦行に感じられることもあります。このような関係は、特定の手法に思い入れのある技術者と結果を出すことが大事なマネージャーの間でも、会社の事業内容が大事な経営者と事業内容がどうであれ資産価値に興味のある投資家の間でも、どこにでもありそうな構造のようです。

こういう構造の中で、最近とりわけ気になるのは、各々が持ち得る大局観に優劣をつけていそうなことで（より広い視点での大局観の方が優れているという前提、私はそのような考え方を持ちがちです）、一方で子どもとの関係を考えると必ずしもそれは正しくないようにも思うようになりました。子どもであろうと大人であろうと、他人の目的をそれは単なる手段だと矮小化しないことが理想だと考えています。なので私は今日も自分を戒めるために、バスに乗るためにバスに乗るのだろうと思います。
