最近私が何をしているのか，と何度か聞かれたので，自分なりの答えをまとめようと思います．今は20代の頃からずっとやりたかった「キャリアの合間に時間を取って，面白そうなことをやる」ということをしていて，有り体に言えばギャップイヤーとかになるんでしょうが，勝手に「self-produced sabbatical（SPS）」と呼んでいます．カッコをつけるための横文字です．

20代の頃は，フランスで製菓学校に行く，ブラジルにカポエラ留学する，南太平洋の海の家で働く，などのことをしたいと思っていました．それらはまだやりたいのですが，とはいえ今それらをやってしまうと，少しキャリアに響きそう，なんて打算もするようになったのが年を重ねるということです．結局，趣味とキャリアの重複部分である，仕事をしながら世界を回る，ということをしようと思い，現在の状況に至りました．アメリカの仕事を昨年夏に終えてから，サンパウロ大学（ブラジル），清華大学（台湾），東京大学（日本），サウジアラムコ（サウジアラビア）と異動してきました．間に休みを取ったのはブラジルと台湾の引っ越しの１週間だけで，他は日の単位で連続してるという，日本的履歴書にもバッチリなスケジュールです．自分でも驚くんですが，こういう生真面目なところは日本人だなあと思います．

それぞれの研究所では何をやってるかと言うと，自分の専門であるマイクロ流体という技術をベースに，少しずつ異なるプロジェクトに取り組んでいます．全ての研究所で手を動かして自分で実験をしてますし，論文にしたいと思ってやっています．研究の幅が広がるのはそもそも面白いですし，これから自分が研究計画 を打ち出す立場に立った時に，これまでに自分が経験したことのある特定分野の特定技術に固執しないと言う意味で，大変有意義だと思うのです．また，大学の研究職はフリーランスみたいなものですから，色んなところに共同研究者がいて，一緒にお金を取ってきたりできる方が断然有利です．これは同業者じゃないと理解されづらいのですが，そういう繋がりができることもキャリアに取っての大きなプラスになります．

というような，キャリアにおいての便益がたくさん期待される SPS ですが，これらは全て推測です．私は後付けで理由を付けたり，知らなかったことを昔から考えていた体（てい）で先見の明があったと主張する人はあまり尊敬しませんので，現状はっきりしている動機については正直になりたいと思います．

結局自分の一番の動機になっているのは，旅行が好きで外国語が好きで，色んな所の色んな人と話すのが好き，という好きなことをやりたいという気持ちで す．１つアメリカで働いた経験から確かだと思うのは，旅行は楽しいんだけど，やはり現地の人と一緒にプロジェクトをやる方が，現地に対する理解も深まるし，現地の言葉を話す機会も多いし，衝突も多いし，相手のこともよくわかるし，その後も続く人間関係ができるんだと思うのです．ここ半年はそれぞれ数ヶ月単位で異動してるので，少し短いのも正直なところなんですが，まあ好きで面白いからやってるのが一番のところです．

あともう１つ付け加えるなら「博士課程」「理工系」「研究」に対する日本の閉塞感が残念であり，もう少し夢をみられる社会になっていいんじゃないかと思います．大学院生時代にボストンの友人と立ち上げた，「博士課程」「理工系」「研究」に従事する人が，自分の研究と世界の繋がりを見られるように，という学生団体は，８年経った今，日本ではコンサルや金融業界へのステップストーンになっています．そのような進路に進む友人にも後輩に否定的な印象はありませんが，一方，そういった進路に進まなければ，将来，自由度を持って活躍する夢を描けないのが日本社会なのだとしたら，それはそれはもったいないし，その認識は正しくもないと思うのです．あの団体の立ち上げメンバーのほとんどは，自分の能力を論理的思考だ理数的素養だと切り売りせず，自分なりの尖ったキャリアを継続 して，それを楽しそうに続けています．だから僕も「博士課程」を経て「理工系」「研究」を楽しそうにやることで，このような進路の可能性を伝えたいと思っています．

以上，僕は外資の雄弁な人ではないので物事を３つにまとめるスキルは持ち合わせていませんが，何で自分が今やっていることをやっているかを，およそ３つくらいにまとめました．
