ボストンには多くの日本人学生が訪問します．少し前に日本で流行った「内向き志向」の反動かもしれませんが，SSH[ref]スーパーサイエンスハイスクール[/ref]と呼ばれる高校や，東京の大学が学校のプログラムとして研修に来ることが多いですし，小学生が来たことすらもありました．ボストン市内には美術館や交響楽団などの文化的な見所もあり，日本でも有名なレッドソックスやセルティックスなどのプロスポーツチームなどもあります．それに加えて，日本でも知られた大学が多いこともあり，大学訪問も頻繁に行われています．キャンパスツアーや，各大学に所属する日本人学生・研究者による講演会や食事会と言う形で，訪問者と大学所属の日本人が交流する機会が設けられることも少なくありません．

私は過去９年，このような学生訪問のアレンジに協力してきました．結構長くやっている方だと思います．今回はそれらを続けての感想，特にオーガナイズに協力する際に感じることについて述べたいと思います．このような企画をアレンジするには，訪問先の関係者（我々）と，訪問者（生徒／学生）以外に，いくつかの「中間エージェント」が関わっています．ここでい う「中間エージェント」とは，研修事業を企画している日本の学校のオフィスであったり，旅行代理店などの利害関係者と考えて構いません．この「中間エー ジェント」という主体が，今回の話の主役です．

ひいき目になってしまいますが，現地の留学生や研究者は，ボランティア精神があり後輩思いの人が多いと思います[ref]広い意味での後輩，つまり日本の若者に対して何かしたい，と思う人が多いと思います[/ref]．私の所属研究所があるMITでも，優秀で人間味あふれる現役学生が忙しい時間の合間を縫って同様の活動に協力しており，足をMITに向けて眠れたことがありません．（すると，足は自然とハーバード大学に向くことになります．笑）　研究者は自分のやっていることを話すのは好きですし，教育に興味があれば後進に自分の経験を伝えられることは嬉しいものです．他にも，パブリックセクターや非営利セクターの方，ユニークな経験を持ったビジネスパーソンも多く，公共心があり面白い経験を学生に伝えられる人は豊富ですし，協力的な方が多いと感じています．そういうことからも，ボストンは「出会いに感謝します，高校生に刺激を与えたい！」的な低年齢向けの訪問事業から，ある程度興味が定まった大学生や大学院生が将来へのステップストーンとする性質を持つ訪問事業まで，協力者を見つけやすい土地柄なのだと思います．

少し青臭い言い方ですが，ボストンでこのような事業に協力する人の主な動機は「日本の学生のために何か役に立ちたい」という純粋なものです[ref]以前の日本の所属に頼まれて協力するなど，それ以外の場合もあるっちゃあるんでしょうが，「高校生や大学生のために何かしたい」という目的で協力する人が多数と考えて問題ないと思います[/ref]．しかし「中間エージェント」の目的，利害，モチベーションは，この機会を通じてお金を儲けることであったり，見栄えの良い事業成果をあげることだったるするわけで，「我々」や「生徒／学生」のそれらと異なるかもしれません．異なる利害関係者の間で動機の違いがあることは当然ですし，「学生を食い物にして金儲けなどとはけしからん！」などと主張するほどナイーブでもありません[ref]以前はそのような風に感じてたこともありましたが，30も過ぎてやっとスレてきました．笑[/ref]． しかし，あまりにもそれらが「学生のためになる」ことと乖離していたり，自分の信条と対立があると感じてしまうなら，申し訳ないのですが協力をお断りしています．私が気持ちよく働けず，協力する意味を見出せないからです．ボランティアなので，活動の目的だとか，自分のモチベーションを満たせているか，についてはシビアに判断したいと思うのです．

少し批判的に聞こえることを承知で書きますが，「中間エージェント」の皆さまには，自分たちだけではなく，ボランティアでも事業に協力する人の動機や利益は何かを考えて，企画をマネジメントして欲しいと思います．以下３点，私の経験に基づく要望です．

１．学生の要望や感想を聞きたい．

繰り返しますが，僕が興味があるのは「生徒／学生」です．講演ををするなら，学生が聞きたい講演をしたいですし，学生がどのような感想を持ったか知りたいと思っています．大学生であれば訪問者の専門的な興味を前もって知ることは，当然期待しています．高校生であれば一般的な内容の講演になりがちかもしれませんが，それでも「留学の話」「研究の話」「将来の話」など，どんな話を聞きたいか，この訪問で何をしたいか，などを知りたいと思うのです．しかし，こんな要望でも，現実にはそれほど単純に通らないようです．

高校生の海外訪問の企画には，複数の旅行代理店が関わるらしく．少なくとも，日本で１つ，現地で１つというのが一般的と聞きました．これはこれで，どれだけ税金が中抜きされて無駄になっているかと思うと，由々しい話ですが，まあそれは構造上，何ともならないのでしょうか．個人的に更に由々しいことは，間に複数のエージェントが絡むと，直接学生とやり取りすることが指数関数的に難しくなることです．例えば高校訪問なら，我々受け入れ側に前もって届く情報は，高校名，学生の人数くらいのものです．残念ながら直接やりとりができないものですから，私から旅行代理店に要望を出しても，学生の希望が訪問前に伝えられたり，後日感想が届いたことは過去に一度もありません．友人のケースでは，訪問高校が，来ると伝えられていた高校ではなかった，という経験があったそうです．旅行代理店にとっては，訪問高校が商売のピースの１つでしかないのだろうと，悲しい気持ちになったのを覚えています．

対照的に，２００６年くらいだったでしょうか，「家族が日本の高校で教頭をしているのだけど，生徒のボストン研修の相談に乗ってあげて欲しい」という要望を受けて，大学院ツアーや講演などを引き受けたことがありました．この時は直接高校とやり取りしたこともあり，学生との距離が近くなりました．正直なところ準備に時間はかかったのですが，後日プリントに手書きの感想が書かれて送られてきたりと，とても思い出に残る経験になりました．女子高だったのでイラスト付きのかわいらしい感想をくれた子が何人もいたとか，オッサン的享楽[ref]当時は今より若かったですが．[/ref]は別にしても，話のどの部分が面白かった，これをもっと聞きたかった，大学に入ったらアメリカに留学したいと思った，とか，そういう率直な感想が聞けたことが自分に取っての一番のやり甲斐だったことを追記しておきます．[ref]余談になりますが，その講演で一番受けが良かった話は「高校の勉強なんて役に立つのか」という質問に対しての答えとして話した，「ブルガリアで Yes と No の首の振り方が違うという文化人類学的な小話が，地理の教科書の小さなコラムに書いてあったのね．高校の時の自分はそういうのを読むのが好きだったんだけど，そのおかげで20代になって言葉が通じないブリガリア旅行に言った時に，相手のジェスチャーを見てバスの降り場を間違えなくてすんだんだよ．勉強って素敵だよね．」という他愛もない話だったのです．いろんな話をして，何が生徒の心に残ったかはわからなかったので，こういうフィードバックがあったことを感謝しています．また，こういう小さな反応や驚きが自分には楽しく，その後の役にも立っています．[/ref]

２．体裁を整えることを目的にしないで欲しい．

「分野は問わないので，ハーバードの研究室の見学をしたい／ハーバードの研究者とのアポイントメントを取って欲しい」

これは大学生訪問に際して，とある日本の大学から受けた要望です．訪問を企画している日本の大学にとっては，訪問予定の空きを埋めたり，ハーバードの研究室 を訪問したという事実が重要なのでしょうが，それは学生のためになっているのでしょうか．興味のない教授と，目的のないアポを取っても，何も学生のために なりません．また僕は当該大学の「グローバルなんちゃらプログラム」の翌年度のパンフレットの昨年度実績欄に，「ハーバード研究室訪問」という軽薄な文字列とか，白人の教授を日本人学生が笑顔で囲む人為的な写真が加わることに，わずかな価値も感じません．厳密には，価値を認める人がいるのはわかるけど，それに加担したくありません．ちなみに，そのような時間を浪費するだけの訪問者の紹介をすると，紹介者や訪問者のその後の印象は著しく悪くなりますので，その点も気にかけて欲しいと思います．相手にとっては，その１つの経験が，日本の大学の今後の印象を決めるかもしれないのです．

「ハーバード大学に所属している日本人を集めて欲しい」

これも同様によく受けるリクエストです．だけど，目的が体裁を整えるだけに聞こえてしまうため，もう少し何がしたいのか説明して欲しいと思います．

そもそもハーバードに所属している日本人なら誰でも良いのでしょうか．留学生や研究者に限っても，ボストンには他にも多くの大学，企業，研究所があって，多くの日本人が在留しています．そして，日本人学生に「刺激を与える」[ref]これもモヤっとした意識高い系のジャーゴンなので，できればもう少し何を希望しているか説明する努力をして欲しいです．[/ref] のは，ハーバードにいる人にしかできませんか？高校生・大学生の目標になるような素敵な人はハーバード大学以外にもたくさんいるにも関わらず，ハーバード関係者でなければいけない理由はありますか．教育機関として，生徒や学生が「ハーバード＝最強」みたいな窮屈なマインドセットを持っていたら，それを壊して自由になって欲しいとは思わないのですか．

また，一口にハーバード関係者と言っても，本当に色んなタイプの人がいます．留学先での立場（学部生，大学院生，ポスドク，訪問研究者，教員），専門（理学，工学，法学，教育学，ビジネス，デザイン，医学，・・・），経験（学生直後，社会人経験後，シニア，・・・）もそうですし，もしロールモデルを示したければ，性別とか日本の出身[ref]良くも悪くも，日本は東京と地方では情報の格差があります．例えばですが，地方の高校が訪問する際に，同じ地域の出身の方が来たりすれば，身近なロールモデルになる，みたいな考え方もできると思います．[/ref] という切り口もあります．訪問学生がどのようなグループの人であり，どんな教育効果を目指そうと思う，だからどのような相手と話したい，とか説明してくれると，受け入れ側としては声もかけやすくなります．何も企画書を出せ，と言ってるわけではありませんし，もちろん期待通りの教育効果が必ずあるなんて思いません．ただ，何を目指しているか，くらいは説明してくれないと，協力者も対応し辛いのはご理解頂ければと思います．そして多分僕がひねくれているのでしょうが，やみくもな「ハーバードは神！」みたいな盲目的礼賛にもブランド化にも辟易しています．もしそう言う企画を望むなら，そう言うのを厭わない方にお願いするのが良いと思います．僕は絶対にイヤですが．（「ハーバード」をどの大学名，会社名などに変えても同じです．）

最後少し投げやりになりましたが，例えば「誰でも良いから日本人の女の子を紹介してくれ」とか「婚活中なので誰か医者を紹介して」とかに対してどう感じるかを考えたら，上記２つの要望の滑稽さが伝わるでしょうか？ざっくりとしたグループだけを示して，誰でもいいし，何がしたいかもわからない，ならば，そこから価値のあるものが生まれる可能性は低いと思っています．

３．協力者に最低限の敬意を払って欲しい．

とても残念ですが，中間エージェントとのやり取りの中で，不躾な感じを受けることは少なくありません．「これからの日本を担う高校生に刺激を与えるために協力をお願いします」と美辞麗句を並べて日本人が頭を下げれば，在外日本人は当然協力するべきだと思っているんだろう，と邪推してしまうことすらもあります．僕を含めて，全ての在外日本人には生活，学業，仕事がありますし，そもそも依頼があれば受けるべきものだと勘違いして頂きたくはありません．

直接やり取りのある在米の旅行代理店に関しても，もちろん全ての会社が同様に杜撰だというつもりはありませんが，ダブルブッキングや直前のキャンセルなど，講演のために準備する協力者に対して，気遣いも礼儀もない場合もありました．また自分が学生時代のことを思い出すと，学生はチョロいと思われているのか，旅行代理店などにいい加減に扱われやすかったと思います．

また，そもそもボランティアだから何を頼んでも良いと思われているのか，文句を言わなければ，平気で依頼内容が増えていきます．講演依頼を受けただけなのに，講演のための部屋の予約もすることになっていたり（外部の団体が大学の建物を使用するには許可が必要な場合もあり，週末だと煩雑な場合もあり大変です），日本人学生との夕食のため参加者に声かけして欲しいと依頼されたら，会場レストランの予約もしなければならなかったり（大人数での予約は，キャンセルや変更の場合に金銭的な負担が生じることもあります．それは協力者が一瞬でも負うべきリスクでしょうか），などは頻繁に起こる話です．

少しやりとりがなあなあに感じるのは，日本的な慣習なのか，こちらがボランティアだからか，学生対応だからなのでしょうか．想像ですが，ビジネスなら「今回はここまでしか頼まれてないけど，役に立つでしょうからこれも追加でやっておきましょうか．今後もよろしくお願いします．」みたいな気遣いはあって良い気がします．しかし，一方的に協力しているボランティアにもそれを求めたら，どんな印象を与えるでしょうか．いずれにしても，協力者として，このようなことが続くとやる気がなくなることは，ご理解頂きたく思っています．

以上，中間エージェントとのやり取りに伴う改善希望点を述べました．客観的に見たら他の利害関係者にも改善点はあると思います．訪問者も，準備不足が目立ち，税金を使っておいて何がSSHだと言われてもしょうがない学校もあります．もちろん，我々の側も意気込みだけでなく，本当に訪問者のためになるホストにならなければいけません．また不満はあっても，これらの「中間エージェント」の存在がこういった企画を大規模で実現させているのも事実で，その貢献を過小評価するつもりはありません．日本の高校生・大学生の海外訪問事業は，参加者によっては人生が変わるほどの意味を持つ機会になりえますし，教育者を目指す者としても，できるだけ協力したいという気持ちは持っています．

やさぐれたことを言うと，たとえ私１人が嫌になって断っても，大勢に影響はありません．先に述べたようにボストンには人格的にも経験的にも，僕より後輩のロールモデルに相応しい方々にあふれています．このような話が最初来たときには，僕自身がそうであったように，みなさん善意から進んで協力するでしょうし，違和感を感じても数度の協力なら文句を言わないのだと思います．日本人の入れ替わりも頻繁ですので，各協力者の気分を数回ずつ害しながら，同様の事業は継続できるに違いありません．しかし，入れ替わる人の善意を使い捨てにしながら事業を継続することが素晴らしいことかと言うと，僕は全くそうは思いませんし，度が過ぎる場合は虫唾が走ります．「中間エージェント」には，協力者のやる気のマネジメントにもう少し気を配って頂き，（１）「学生」のためになり，（２）「協力者」が気持ち良く働けて，（３）「中間エージェント」にも，金儲けになったり，対外的メンツが保たれるような企画になって，利害関係者全てにとって幸せな事業をアレンジして頂ければなあ，と思っています．[ref]文章から滲み出ていると思うので隠しませんが，私は（３）は積極的に好きではありません．でも（１）と（２）のクオリティーに納得できれば，（３）の達成にも役に立つ協力ができると思っていますし，こういうと語弊があるかもしれませんが，利用してもらって構いません．[/ref]
