僕はデジカメの写真をコンピューターに入れて整頓してアップロードするのが苦手だ。今日は２ヶ月前の飲み会、３ヶ月前の卒業パーティーの写真を送り、９ヶ月前のミャンマー旅行の写真を現地で親切にしてくれた友人に送り、あまつさえ３年前にNYで撮った写真を先輩に送った。受け取った先輩も忘れてたに違いない。

僕は無駄に生真面目で時間と精神を浪費する性格だ。返信が必要なメールは全てメールボックスに残っている。先輩から写真をリクエストされたメールはその３年間、メールボックスの一番下に沈んだままになっていた。

彼が欲しいと言った「NYの地下鉄で撮った写真」はコンピューターのどこを探しても見つからない。いつの間にか自分は、当時地下鉄に乗車していたその先輩の年齢を超えていた。もしその写真が本当に存在するのであればーー彼の時間は写真の中で止まったままだ。

メールの表題は「写真系」。系をつけることで婉曲表現を示す2000年代前半の表現に違いない。その頃から毎朝Gmailを開くことが億劫になっていた。「写真系」という表現の軽さと、自分の心にのしかかる重みは反比例する。僕はそのプレッシャーから逃げるために研究に打ち込み、その辛さをバネにして博士号を取った。しかし「NYの地下鉄で撮った写真」はまだ見つからない。当然だ、探すべきものから目を逸らしていたのだから。博士号はスタート地点だ、という言葉は本当だった。ああ、俺はこれからいつまで写真を探し続けなければならないのか。その写真は生涯をかけて探す価値のあるものなのか、自問自答した。

さらに歳を重ね、自分の探しているものがおよそ写真などではなく、究極的には０と１で書かれた記号に過ぎないということを悟った。2年間自分が探していた「写真」は、全く見当違いなものだったのかもしれない。JPGというわかりやすい記号を見つけては一喜一憂し、ファイルを開くたびにこれが探しているものだろうと、心を踊らせた自分の浅はかさを思い知った。いずれOSがアップデートされ、クリックせずに画像のプレビューが現れるようになった。ただ、それは中身を映すように見せて本質から目を逸らさせていたのだ。幼かった。

あるいは０と１という表現すらもおよそ本質的な理解ではなく、自分が探しているものは、自身の心の奥深くにひそむ生来的な弱さを、写真を探す過程に写像することで表現した、形而上学的にのみ存在しうる何かと言えないだろうか。いつからか、そんな自分の弱い部分を理解したーーいや、自分の感情が、自分の心が、それをア・プリオリな存在として受け入れたと言う方が正確だろうか。ふと気付けば雪に埋もれたボストンの大地が、少しずつ太陽に顔を見せ始めた２０１１年のボストンの春だった。

世界は美しい。２年８ヶ月ぶりに吸い込む太陽の明るさを、空の青さを、僕はすっかり忘れていたのだろう。観光客が色めき立つハーバードスクエアには、いつの間にかスターバックスができていた。３年前の自分であれば、その美しい外観を０と１の記号の羅列に収めることで、何を満たした気持ちになっていたんだろう。

探し続けた「NYの地下鉄で撮った写真」は、あっけないほど簡単に見つかった。いつも持ち運んでいるMacbookの中の、To be sorted というフォルダを少しだけ開いたところに、その写真は入っていた。ファルダの奥底に潜んでいたわけでもなければ、ファイル名が複雑だったわけでもないのだ。３年間かけて自分がSortしたのは、フォルダに象徴されるヒエラルキー型の階層構造ではなく、複雑に絡み合う自分の心の弱さであり、その弱さを受け入れる強さだった。写真を見つけたという区切り自体にさほどの意味もなく、あっけない結末はそれまでの過程のあっけなさを必ずしも意味しない。

今日、先輩から2008年8月27日に受け取ったメールに返信した。写真を送るのに３年かかってしまったお詫びと一緖に、その「NYの地下鉄で撮った写真」のJPGファイルを添付したメールを先輩に送った。揺れる電車の中で手ブレしたデジタル写真の中のぼやけた先輩や友人は、自分の目には鮮やかな輪郭を伴って見えた。

30分後に、後輩に対しても丁寧で律儀な先輩から、さっそくメールの返信が来た。
「こんにちはー　メール＆写真、どうもありがとうございます！！」

このメールにもう一度返信しアーカイブするとき、僕のメールボックスに「写真系」が現れることはなくなるだろう。しかし３年間かけて自分が学んだことは色褪せない。今自分の目には「写真」ではなく「写真系」が見えているのだから。
